Starting Your Will

A note before we begin

- If you purchased The Journey and it has been sitting in a drawer since, please don’t worry. That is completely normal.

What matters most is that you start, gently and in a way that feels manageable.

The new year often brings a sense of reset, and January can be the perfect time to take one small, practical step that future-you (and your family) will be grateful for.

Why this matters more than people think

In conversations with clients, the same patterns come up again and again:

  • A large number of people don’t yet have a will
  • Many people who do have one know it needs to be reviewed

Putting a will in place is one of the simplest ways to reduce uncertainty and stress for the people you love.
And yet, it is often delayed because it can feel complicated, emotional, or overwhelming.

The reality is that the first step can be much simpler than most people expect.

On a personal note

The new year always feels like a fresh start for me.

Last year was a very tough one for me and my family. My Dad, Liam Tierney, passed away in August, and he was so proud of this folder and what it stands for. I feel him with me, and I know he is supporting me and cheering me on as I enter this new year.

Your Gentle January task

For your first step of 2026, I want you to do one important thing for your own peace of mind. Choose the option that applies to you.

1) If you do not have a will

Contact your solicitor and book an appointment.

2) If you already have a will

Take out your copy and read through it. Life changes quickly, and it is so important that your will still reflects your wishes.

Helpful resources to make this easy

To support you, I have included two downloads (choose the one that matches where you are right now):

If it’s your first time making a will

Use the Will Starter Pack before your appointment so you feel clear and prepared.

If you’re reviewing an existing will

Use the Will Review Checklist to scan the key areas and spot anything that may need updating.

These resources are designed to help you feel more confident and organised. They are a practical starting point, and not a replacement for legal advice. A full will tailored to your circumstances should always be prepared with your solicitor.

If you want an even gentler starting point

If you are finding it hard to begin, a lovely first step is to open Part 2 of The Journey and fill out the pages about your likes, dislikes, favourite memories, and the small details that make you, you.

It is light, it is doable, and it helps you get pen to paper.
